Discovering Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport

Discovering Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport

A Magical Prelude to Christmas in Kennebunkport

As December rolls in, the charming coastal village of Kennebunkport, Maine transforms into a twinkling winter wonderland. The highlight? Christmas Prelude, an annual holiday festival that brings together community spirit, local tradition, and artisan charm.

History & Heart of the Festival

Christmas Prelude dates back to 1982, when local business leaders, led by Henry Pasco, decided to create a town-wide celebration to “give back” to the community.  What began as a modest three-day event (including a tree lighting, chowder luncheon, and caroling) has blossomed into a 12-day coastal holiday tradition.

The festival is organized by the Kennebunkport Business Association (KBA), an all-volunteer group that donates all proceeds to local nonprofits and community projects. Over the years, the festival has become one of the busiest shopping and fundraising periods for the town, and a much-loved part of Kennebunkport’s identity.

Key Events & Festivities

  • Tree Lighting in Dock Square: The official kick-off takes place the first Friday in December. The Kennebunk High School Chamber Choir leads carols before the tree is lit at 6 p.m. christmasprelude.com

  • Lobster-Trap Tree Lighting in Cape Porpoise: A uniquely coastal tradition, this tree is made of lobster traps and decorated with lights and buoys. kennebunkport.org

  • Hat Parade: Residents and visitors alike don festive hats (some handmade!), parading through town in a joyful march. christmasprelude.com

  • Santa Arrival by Lobster Boat: Perhaps the most whimsical event—Santa arrives via lobster boat, with “lobster elves” in tow. kennebunkport.org

  • Fire & Ice: At the Nonantum Resort, guests enjoy live music, ice sculptures, fire pits, and seasonal cocktails.

  • Candlelight Caroling, Craft Fairs & More: Between weekends, you’ll find dozens of uniquely themed events—everything from caroling at monasteries to artisan markets.

  • Fireworks: Since 2011, there’s been a fireworks show after the tree lighting in Dock Square.

Why Kennebunkport Shines as a Holiday Destination

  • Community-Driven: Every part of Prelude is volunteer-led. Local schools, churches, and civic groups all contribute—many raising funds through the event.

  • Sustainable & Artistic: Decor and programming lean into Kennebunkport’s coastal roots, with lobster-trap trees, hand-made wreaths, and local craftsmanship.

  • Celebrated Nationally: Kennebunkport has been ranked #2 Christmas Town in America by HGTV.

  • Tourism & Local Business Boost: Prelude is massive for local businesses—the festival weekends can double or triple retail traffic. christmasprelude.com

Minka: A Boutique Right in the Heart of the Holiday Magic

Nestled directly across from the giant Christmas tree in Dock Square, you’ll find Minka, a gallery-boutique that feels like a stylish, soulful home.

Why Minka Is Special During Prelude

  • Location, Location, Location: Addressed at 3 Dock Square, Minka sits smack in the center of the action. During the festival, you're just steps away from the tree lighting, caroling, and fireworks.

  • Designed With Intention: Minka’s founders, Michelle Rose and Chris Larochelle, build the store around natural materials, sustainability, and art. Their collections range from pottery, hand-woven blankets, and candles to sterling silver jewelry and botanical body care.

  • Rooted in Community: Many of Minka’s products are made in Maine, or by independent U.S. artisans. This alignment with the values of local craft and handmade design makes Minka especially at home during a festival like Prelude—where community, tradition, and giving matter deeply.

  • Shop + Experience: "Whether you're browsing for a meaningful gift or treating yourself, Minka’s immersive, beautifully styled store offers a respite from the holiday hustle. Locals and visitors alike describe it as a place to pause, breathe, and delight in design."

Tips for Visitors During Prelude

  1. Arrive Early (or on Weeknights): Prelude weekends draw big crowds. To experience Dock Square before it fills up, consider coming early in the day or on a weekday.

  2. Use Offsite Parking & Shuttle Options: Parking in town is limited during Prelude—it’s often smarter to park off-site and walk or take a shuttle.

  3. Shop Local: Besides Minka, Dock Square is filled with boutiques, galleries, and artisans. Prelude is the best time to discover one-of-a-kind gifts.

  4. Bundle Up: Evenings in early December in Maine can be brisk. Warm clothes + cozy shoes go a long way.

  5. Plan for Multiple Events: The schedule includes everything from caroling to craft fairs, so check the official Christmas Prelude calendar to make the most of your visit
